The Sœurs Servantes de Jésus are a Congolese congregation of diocesan right, founded in 1937 in Bunia, the capital of Ituri Province, by Bishop Alphonse Matthysen, a Missionary of Africa and the first Bishop of the diocese of Bunia and Mahagi Nioka.
The founder wanted the Congregation to work for Redemption and the care of souls by following its charism, which is expressed in “service in the various works of the Church, following the example of Christ the servant”. The Congregation’s works concern catechesis, primary, secondary and university education, medical assistance and assistance to vulnerable people (orphans, the elderly, pastoral care of the Pygmies, disaster victims, etc.). Pastoral care of children, young people and families, general services (at the Bishop’s residence and at the administrative office of the diocese of Bunia, the diocese of Mahagi Nioka and the diocese of Kalemie-Kirungu, at the Saint Siprier major theological seminary in Bunia and at the Archdiocese of Kisangani). The Congregation currently has 198 sisters and 37 young women in formation. The Sisters Servants of Jesus work in the Congo in the dioceses of Bunia – 16 communities, Kalemie Kirungu – 1 community, Mahagi-Nioka – 15 communities, Wamba – 2 communities, and in the Archdiocese of Kisangani – 3 communities. In Uganda, they have one community in the Archdiocese of Kampala.
