The story of a mother welcomed by the Pro-Life Movement
From violence to hope. A young Albanian mother welcomed by a Pro-Life Movement shelter

A new life that turns into a nightmare

When Aegerta left Albania to join her husband in Italy, she imagined building a peaceful family. She was in her early twenties, with a stable job and many plans. A few months later came the most beautiful news: she was pregnant with her first child.

But that happiness was short-lived. Her husband began spending all their money on gambling, leaving the family without financial resources. Psychological violence became increasingly frequent, turning home into a place of fear. Aegerta found herself alone in a foreign country, without a family support network and with a baby on the way.

The choice to ask for help

For a long time she tried to endure, hoping the situation would change. Instead, it got worse. Humiliations increased, money was not even enough for daily needs, and the future seemed closed.

It was then that someone told her about Casa 2000 – Accoglienza con il Cuore, promoted by the Centro di Aiuto alla Vita of Biella. Crossing that threshold meant taking the hardest, but also the most important step of her life.

In the Home she found much more than shelter. She found people ready to listen, support, and accompany her on a journey of rebirth, without judgment.

Rebuilding trust

The welcoming environment allowed Aegerta to start over slowly. The staff helped her regain confidence in her abilities, care for her child peacefully, and plan an independent future.

In the shelter she learned that asking for help is not a sign of weakness, but the first step toward freedom. Thanks to educational and human support, she managed to build new stability, away from violence and economic dependence.

Her story shows that when a woman is supported at the most fragile moment of her life, the destiny of the child she carries changes as well.

A home that restores hope

The Shelter Homes of the Movimento per la Vita were created precisely for this: to offer refuge to pregnant women or mothers with small children facing severe hardship. They are not merely welfare facilities, but places where relationships are rebuilt, self-esteem is recovered, and pathways to independence are prepared.

Each guest follows a personalized project supported by educators, psychologists, social workers, and volunteers. The goal is not to create dependency on the assistance received, but to give mothers the tools to stand on their own feet and offer children a safe environment in which to grow.

Mercy that opens a door

Aegerta’s story reminds us that behind every difficult pregnancy is a person asking, often in silence, not to be left alone. An open door, a bed, a sincere listening ear, and an outstretched hand can make the difference between despair and hope.

This is the strength of Shelter Homes: transforming solidarity into a concrete possibility of rebirth. In a time when so many women face motherhood in solitude, these initiatives continue to witness that mercy is not an abstract idea, but a home that welcomes, protects, and restores a future.
