"Bimbingamba," Zanardi's dream continues to walk in the footsteps of children.

Hope for hundreds of young amputees around the world: the association founded by Alex Zanardi and Franco Ferri transforms pain into a future.
When you think of Alex Zanardi, it's natural to think of the champion, his unbreakable smile, his strength after the accident that cost him both his legs in 2001. But perhaps his greatest masterpiece is an act of love that became a concrete project: the Alex Zanardi Bimbingamba Association, an organization that continues to change the lives of child amputees around the world.
A dream born from fragility
Bimbingamba was born in 2007 From a simple yet powerful insight: no child should be denied the ability to run, play, or grow because they don't have a prosthetic. The organization creates artificial limbs for young patients who cannot access the necessary healthcare in their own countries.
They come from war zones, from contexts of poverty or from difficult health situations: children who have lost one or more limbs due to accidents, illnesses or explosionsIn Budrio, in the province of Bologna, they find a medical team and volunteers who support them not only in their physical rehabilitation but also in their human hospitality during their stay in Italy.
In over fifteen years of activity, more than one hundred children have been treated and hundreds of custom-made prostheses have been created, adapted over time to the growth of the young patients.
Zanardi's lesson: transforming the limit
Bimbingamba's strength stems directly from Zanardi's personal story. After his accident on the Lausitzring circuit, the former driver chose not to stop. He reinvented his life in Paralympic sport, becoming a global symbol of resilience.
But the decisive step was another: putting one's experience at the service of othersIf he had been able to return to life thanks to prosthetic technology and rehabilitation, then the same right should also belong to the most fragile children.
Thus personal suffering has turned into concrete solidarityZanardi raised funds, donated sports memorabilia, and engaged doctors, technicians, and volunteers, building a network capable of restoring independence and hope.
Not just prosthetics: restoring the future
Bimbingamba doesn't just provide an artificial limb. It restores a chance at life. The children are accompanied throughout the rehabilitation and human journey: they learn to walk, to play, to feel equal to others.
The project has also expanded to include sports, with initiatives that introduce kids to handcycling and other Paralympic activities, so that movement can foster freedom and self-confidence.
Behind every prosthetic is a story: like Palina's, who came from an Eastern European orphanage and grew up with the association, returning every year to adapt the prosthetics as she grew and build a future full of dreams.
The legacy that continues to walk
Bimbingamba perhaps tells better than any biography who Alex Zanardi really was: a man who never separated courage from tenderness.
His legacy is not only sporting. It is a culture of life that rejects resignationEvery child who runs again, every smile returned, every step regained is proof that fragility can become shared strength.
Because, as Zanardi taught us with his story, it's not what life takes from us that matters, but what we choose to give to others. And today Bimbingamba continues to do so: step by step, leg by leg, hope by hope.
