1. From Armenian roots to pastoral leadership

Ignatius Choukrallah Maloyan was born in 1869 in Mardin, in the then Ottoman Empire, into a deeply Christian Armenian family. He entered the Armenian Catholic clergy at a young age, distinguishing himself for his intelligence, poise, and spirit of service.

Ordained a priest, he carried out pastoral and educational duties, until being appointed Archbishop of Mardin in 1911. He was an attentive pastor, close to his people, committed to strengthening their faith in times already marked by tension and uncertainty.

2. The time of persecution and the test of faith

In 1915, with the beginning of the persecution against the Armenians, the situation deteriorated dramatically. Maloyan was also arrested, along with priests and faithful.

He was promised salvation in exchange for renouncing his Christian faith and embracing Islam. The answer was clear: he would never have denied Christ nor did he abandon his Church. In those dark hours, he continued to encourage his fellow prisoners, urging them to trust in God and persevere.
