Poor and in frail health, but rich in zeal and love for Christ, the Foundress and the first sisters performed wonders of charity at the bedside of sick and dying women, in poor dwellings where even those close to death lay alone and abandoned. <\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"350\" height=\"120\" src=\"https:\/\/spaziospadoni.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Suore-Ministre-degli-Infermi-Barbantini.png\" alt=\"Sisters-Ministers-of-the-Sick-Barbantini\" class=\"wp-image-45983\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spaziospadoni.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Suore-Ministre-degli-Infermi-Barbantini.png 350w, https:\/\/spaziospadoni.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Suore-Ministre-degli-Infermi-Barbantini-300x103.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sisters Ministers of the Sick of Saint Camillus are women consecrated to God who, following the charism of Maria Domenica, devote themselves entirely to serving those who suffer, the sick and the dying, in whom they see the face of Jesus: \u201cI was sick and you visited me\u2026you did it to me\u201d (Mt 25:36,40), according to the foundress\u2019s instruction: \u201cto\u202fvisit, assist and serve\u202fGod made man, agonizing in the garden or dying on the cross\u201d. Following the example of the Virgin Mary at the foot of the cross, through their lives and their works they bear witness to the world of the Father\u2019s merciful charity, compassion and tenderness towards each of his creatures.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mission of the Ministers of the Sick is expressed principally: <\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>in practising healthcare and social healthcare professions in people\u2019s homes, where the need is real and urgent, and in public and private facilities, caring for the person as a whole; <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>in providing spiritual and pastoral assistance to the sick and their families; <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>in training healthcare and pastoral workers and volunteers; <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>in humanizing the world of healthcare. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They work in collaboration with lay people to defend the dignity and sacredness of every person and to promote and protect life from birth to death, according to the principles of Christian bioethics.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"768\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/spaziospadoni.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/2022_settembre_hicsum_12_suor_marielouise_lucca_barbantini_ministre_infermi_formazione_misericordia_viareggio_spazio_spadoni-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-45896\" style=\"aspect-ratio:0.7500065395380471;width:288px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/spaziospadoni.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/2022_settembre_hicsum_12_suor_marielouise_lucca_barbantini_ministre_infermi_formazione_misericordia_viareggio_spazio_spadoni-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/spaziospadoni.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/2022_settembre_hicsum_12_suor_marielouise_lucca_barbantini_ministre_infermi_formazione_misericordia_viareggio_spazio_spadoni-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/spaziospadoni.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/2022_settembre_hicsum_12_suor_marielouise_lucca_barbantini_ministre_infermi_formazione_misericordia_viareggio_spazio_spadoni.jpg 780w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUnited in charity\u201d,\u202fthey live in community, building communion in harmony, peace, joy and mutual love, helping to build a sense of belonging. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a long time, the daughters of Maria Domenica carried out their ministry in the city and province of Lucca, but with Pontifical approval, obtained on 1 December 1929, they were able to expand in Italy and abroad. In Italy, the religious sisters are present in various regions and exercise their ministry in the different fields of healthcare: in people\u2019s homes, in retirement homes, in nursing homes, in hospitals, in healthcare ministry and in religious assistance within the \u201cchaplaincy\u201d. The Institute\u2019s first mission began in 1948 in CHINA, in collaboration with their Camillian confr\u00e8res. This mission experienced the Maoist Revolution and the martyrdom through persecution and hardship of Sr Claudia Martinelli and Father Celestino Rizzi. After this difficult and heroic beginning, the missionaries, expelled from Communist China, arrived in Taiwan, where the religious sisters are now actively engaged in healthcare and healthcare ministry. In 1949, the Institute put down roots in the great South American country of Brazil.<br\/>In the post-conciliar period, in response to the needs of the Church, the Institute opened itself to the \u201cad gentes\u201d missions:\u202fThailand, Kenya, the Philippines,\u202fChile, Haiti,\u202fIndia,\u202fPeru,\u202fVietnam,\u202fIndonesia and\u202fIvory Coast.      <\/p>\n\n<h2 id=\"charism\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Charism<\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maria Domenica entrusted her congregation to the protection of Our Lady of Sorrows and presented her to her daughters as the fundamental inspiration of the charism and the contemplative and apostolic icon of the ministry.
