Paolo Giulietti, Archbishop of Lucca, on the fourth spiritual work of mercy, to live it concretely in daily life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe works of the heart\u201d is a booklet written by Msgr. Paolo Giulietti on the occasion of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy announced in 2015, when he was still auxiliary bishop of Perugia and Citt\u00e0 della Pieve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ten years have passed, but the reflections of the current Archbishop of Lucca regarding the works of mercy remain deeply relevant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The intention is to revisit these brief meditations on the fourteen works to bring them into everyday life: what spazio + spadoni calls the \u201cReEvolution of the works of mercy\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"consoling-the-afflicted\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Consoling the afflicted<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite polished images of perfectly happy individuals and families, the reality of sadness dwells with increasing intensity in our country, as shown by the constant rise in people suffering from mental health conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Growing opportunities for entertainment and gratification can do nothing against an endemic affliction that asks not to be exorcised, but to be welcomed with mercy and healed through consolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is possible to offer true comfort to those who live in sorrow, by virtue of the \u201cjoy of the Gospel\u201d: namely, the possibility of giving meaning and hope to every situation, in the light of Easter faith in the risen Crucified Christ. Through silent and active closeness, through the sharing of the Word of salvation, through compassionate participation in the roots of grief\u2026 affliction softens and opens up to hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Against the illusory promise of a society that eliminates every cause of unhappiness through scientific and technological progress, stands a much more realistic view: sorrow is part of the human experience, yet it can be confronted and overcome if one receives and embraces sound reasons to keep living. In May 2021, he was elected President of the Episcopal Commission for the Family, Youth and Life, leaving his roles as a member of the Episcopal Commission for Education, Schools and Universities and as youth delegate of the Tuscan Episcopal Conference. He was born in Perugia, in the Archdiocese of Perugia\u2013Citt\u00e0 della Pieve, on 1 January 1964. After two years at university, he entered the seminary in Assisi, where he spent six years and attended the Theological Institute of Assisi, obtaining a bachelor\u2019s degree in theology. He was ordained a deacon on 28 October 1990 and a priest on 29 September 1991. During his youth and his time at the seminary, he was particularly committed to the pastoral care of younger generations. After his ordination, he continued to pursue this passion by attending the Pontifical Salesian University and specialising in catechetics and youth ministry. From 1991 to 1995, he lived and worked in the parish of San Sisto. From 1995 to 2001, Bishops Antonelli and Chiaretti appointed him to work full-time with young people as head of the diocesan office, chaplain to several youth associations (AC and FUCI), coordinator of conscientious objectors and chaplain to the \u201cS. Giuseppe Cafasso\u201d community for prisoners run by the diocesan Caritas. In September 2001, he was appointed head of the National Youth Ministry Service of the CEI, a position he held for six years, marked by the World Youth Days in Toronto and Cologne and by the meeting of young Italians with Benedetto XVI in Loreto in September 2007 (Agor\u00e0 dei giovani italiani). From December 2007 to October 2011, he was parish priest of the Pastoral Unit of Ponte San Giovanni. From June 2010, he served as Vicar General of the Diocese of Perugia\u2013Citt\u00e0 della Pieve. On 10 August 2014, he was ordained a bishop, serving as auxiliary to Cardinal Archbishop Gualtiero Bassetti and as Titular Bishop of Termini Imerese. He was born in Perugia, in the Archdiocese of Perugia\u2013Citt\u00e0 della Pieve, on 1 January 1964. After two years at university, he entered the seminary in Assisi, where he spent six years and attended the Theological Institute of Assisi, obtaining a bachelor\u2019s degree in theology. He was ordained a deacon on 28 October 1990 and a priest on 29 September 1991. During his youth and his time at the seminary, he was particularly committed to the pastoral care of younger generations. After his ordination, he continued to pursue this passion by attending the Pontifical Salesian University and specialising in catechetics and youth ministry. From 1991 to 1995, he lived and worked in the parish of San Sisto. From 1995 to 2001, Bishops Antonelli and Chiaretti appointed him to work full-time with young people as head of the diocesan office, chaplain to several youth associations (AC and FUCI), coordinator of conscientious objectors and chaplain to the \u201cS. Giuseppe Cafasso\u201d community for prisoners run by the diocesan Caritas. In September 2001, he was appointed head of the National Youth Ministry Service of the CEI, a position he held for six years, marked by the World Youth Days in Toronto and Cologne and by the meeting of young Italians with Benedetto XVI in Loreto in September 2007 (Agor\u00e0 dei giovani italiani). From December 2007 to October 2011, he was parish priest of the Pastoral Unit of Ponte San Giovanni. From June 2010, he served as Vicar General of the Diocese of Perugia\u2013Citt\u00e0 della Pieve. On 10 August 2014, he was ordained a bishop, serving as auxiliary to Cardinal Archbishop Gualtiero Bassetti and as Titular Bishop of Termini Imerese.
