A great crowd then approached him, bringing with them the lame, the crippled, the blind, the mute, and many other sick people; they placed them at his feet, and he healed them\u2026 Jesus summoned his disciples and said: \u00abI have compassion for this crowd, because they have been with me now for three days and have nothing to eat. I do not want to send them away hungry, for they might faint on the way\u00bb. The disciples said to him: \u00abWhere could we get enough bread in such a deserted place to feed such a crowd?\u00bb. Jesus asked: \u00abHow many loaves do you have?\u00bb. They replied: \u00abSeven, and a few small fish\u00bb. He then ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground, took the seven loaves and the fish, gave thanks, broke them, gave them to his disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds. They all ate and were satisfied, and they picked up seven full baskets of the broken pieces left over. (Mt 15:30-37)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have wondered more than once why the corporal works of mercy begin precisely with feeding the hungry and not, for example, with visiting prisoners or something else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nor can I think that this depends solely on the fact that one of everyone’s primary duties is precisely to ensure that no one lacks daily bread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I imagine that the meaning is deeper and that hunger has far broader and more demanding meanings than the simple and easy reference to flour bread, an almost indispensable food to satisfy hunger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And so I turn to my life and experience to imagine what the first work of mercy, \u201cfeeding the hungry\u201d, intends to convey to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then: hungry for what? Starved by whom? Forced into hunger why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I imagine the hunger for knowledge of a sick person in hospital, or even at home, anxiously waiting to know their state of health. But also the insatiable hunger of almost all those family members who anxiously accompany their loved ones to a medical examination or an invasive test, hanging on every movement of the doctor, on every grimace, smile, or word of diagnosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I also think of another sick person who has been in hospital for days and who, devoted to frequent Holy Communion, sees no one arriving to satisfy their Eucharistic hunger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I imagine mothers in hospital for a variety of reasons, unable to see their children: what hunger for affection and love, thwarted by rules of administrative convenience rather than human promotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My gaze wanders into the often obscure corners of healthcare facilities that do not facilitate the presence of pastoral and spiritual care workers, who find it difficult to scatter the bread of hope and serenity, or even the bread of the viaticum toward new heavens and a new earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think for a moment of healthcare workers who hunger for knowledge, who need the bread of scientific, ethical, and human updates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I cannot forget the hunger for humanization in health facilities, which are often forced to swallow stale, hard bread for years, because the oven that kept it fragrant has remained unlit for too long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I imagine the hunger for knowledge among those who, living in poverty, cannot afford to attend school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think of all the people in prison or under house arrest who have been waiting for years for a verdict and hunger greatly for justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think of all the unemployed people who may even lack daily bread and hunger deeply for work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, flour bread remains essential, satisfying the material hunger that too many people lack or do not have enough of to live a dignified life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We must then put into practice the Lord’s Prayer that we often recite through the deeds we can perform, which, across human, social, or religious fields of commitment, are closed to no one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After all, Jesus had pity on the people who followed him and multiplied the loaves and fish for them, but let us not miss the message of those loaves, which were simultaneously material bread and spiritual bread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even after the resurrection, he appeared to his apostles on the lakeshore while preparing fish to feed them, or when, drawing near to the disciples of Emmaus, he revealed himself in the breaking of the bread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How can we not recall children preparing for their first Communion: innocence meets the Innocent One who sacrificed himself for us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps we must relearn from children how to hunger for Jesus with their simplicity, with a renewed innocence of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, it may happen that we lack the hunger for gratitude!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We must hunger for the desire to always say a great THANK YOU to the Lord for the gift of Himself in the Eucharistic Bread that nourishes us and gives us strength in our daily journey through the world of the poor, the sick, and the suffering, who are our daily bread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
