{"id":97537,"date":"2023-07-10T08:30:43","date_gmt":"2023-07-10T07:30:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spaziospadoni.org\/?p=97537"},"modified":"2026-09-29T13:34:16","modified_gmt":"2026-09-29T12:34:16","slug":"sheltering-pilgrims-the-fourth-work-of-mercy-and-the-gift-of-hospitality","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spaziospadoni.org\/en\/sheltering-pilgrims-the-fourth-work-of-mercy-and-the-gift-of-hospitality\/","title":{"rendered":"Sheltering pilgrims: the fourth Work of Mercy and the gift of hospitality"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 id=\"the-works-of-mercy-through-the-eyes-of-a-biblical-scholar\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Works of Mercy through the eyes of a biblical scholar<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exactly one week before the start of the \u201ctraining\u201d that will engage spazio + spadoni for two weeks on the theme of the Works of Mercy, we continue our in-depth study with the help of biblical scholar Carlo Miglietta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fourth corporal Work of Mercy is \u201csheltering pilgrims\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The biblical scholar reminds us that whoever performs this work is like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>God:<\/strong> \u201cThe land is mine and you reside in my land as foreigners and strangers\u201d (Lev 25:23); \u201cI will receive you, and I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters\u201d (2 Cor 6:17-18).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Jesus<\/strong>, who welcomes the crowds: \u201cHe welcomed them and spoke to them about the kingdom of God, and healed those who needed healing\u201d (Lk 8:40); \u201cCome to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest\u201d (Mt 11:28); \u201cConsequently, you are no longer foreigners (\u00abstrangers\u00bb) and strangers, but fellow citizens with God\u2019s people and members of his household (ed: \u00abfamily members\u00bb: note the play on words) of God\u201d (Eph 2:19).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Abraham<\/strong>, who by hosting three men at Mamre welcomes God Himself (Gen 18; 19:1; Heb 13:2).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Job:<\/strong> \u201cNo stranger had to spend the night in the street, for my door was always open to the traveler\u201d (Job 31:32).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"whoever-welcomes-foreigners-listens-to-the-word-of-god\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Whoever welcomes foreigners listens to the Word of God<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Below are some excerpts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cDo not mistreat or oppress a foreigner, for you were foreigners in Egypt\u201d (Ex 22:20; 23:9).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cDo not deprive the foreigner\u2026 of justice, but remember that you were slaves in Egypt and the Lord your God redeemed you\u201d (Deut 24:17-18).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cThe foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt\u201d (Lev 19:33-34; cf. Deut 27:9).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cCursed is anyone who withholds justice from the foreigner, the fatherless or the widow\u201d (Deut 27:19).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWhoever welcomes a prophet as a prophet will receive a prophet\u2019s reward, and whoever welcomes a righteous person as a righteous person will receive a righteous person\u2019s reward\u201d (Mt 10:41).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWhoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me\u201d (Jn 13:20).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cHe came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him\u201d (Jn 1:11).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cOffer hospitality to one another without grumbling\u201d (1 Pet 4:9).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cShare with the Lord\u2019s people who are in need. Practice hospitality\u201d (Rom 12:13).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cAccept the one whose faith is weak, without quarreling over disputable matters\u201d (Rom 14:1).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cDo not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it\u201d (Heb 13:2; cf. Gen 18:3; 19:2).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The biblical scholar leaves us at the conclusion of this work with a question and a challenge: do we know how to be \u201cfishers of men\u201d (Mk 1:7), identifying those who welcome foreigners and proclaiming to them the beatitude of Mercy: \u201cBlessed are the merciful\u201d (Mt 5:7)?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"hospitality-in-the-hic-sum-project\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hospitality in the HIC SUM project<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hospitality is one of the foundational elements characterizing the HIC SUM project (a Hebrew term meaning \u201cHere I am\u201d), conceived, promoted, and supported by spazio + spadoni.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>First of all, both the missionary Congregation and the Italian association welcome the project to begin structuring it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Italian association and community prepare to welcome the sister who will spend about six months with them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When the sister returns to her community, she will share her experience and the proposal to launch a small social enterprise. Concurrently, she will begin training a group of volunteers who will work with her to carry out Works of Mercy. In 2023, she returned to missionary work with the Sorelle di Santa Gemma in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where she remained for three months. In 2024, she spent one month in Ivory Coast, once again at one of the missions of the Sorelle di Santa Gemma.
