{"id":97700,"date":"2023-07-18T07:30:59","date_gmt":"2023-07-18T06:30:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spaziospadoni.org\/?p=97700"},"modified":"2026-09-29T21:29:29","modified_gmt":"2026-09-29T20:29:29","slug":"comforting-the-afflicted-the-fourth-spiritual-work-of-mercy-by-carlo-miglietta","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spaziospadoni.org\/en\/comforting-the-afflicted-the-fourth-spiritual-work-of-mercy-by-carlo-miglietta\/","title":{"rendered":"Comforting the afflicted: the fourth spiritual Work of Mercy by Carlo Miglietta"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 id=\"the-works-of-mercy-through-the-eyes-of-a-biblicist\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Works of Mercy through the eyes of a biblicist<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the contribution of biblicist Carlo Miglietta, we examine the fourth spiritual work, useful for the in-depth study organized by spazio + spadoni on the Works of Mercy currently taking place in Lucca.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fourth spiritual Work of Mercy is \u201cto comfort the afflicted\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The biblicist points out that whoever performs this work is similar to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>God<\/strong>: \u201cI, even I, am he who comforts you\u201d (Is 51:12); \u201cAs one whom his mother comforts, so I will comfort you; and you shall be comforted in Jerusalem\u201d (Is 66:13); \u201cThe Lord comforts his people and will have compassion on his afflicted\u201d (Is 49:13; cf. 57:18-19); \u201cI have surely seen the affliction of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry\u2026; for I know their sorrows. So I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians\u201d (Ex 3:7-8); \u201cThis poor man cried, and the Lord heard him, and saved him out of all his troubles\u201d (Ps 34:6,17); \u201cBecause the poor are plundered and the needy groan, I will now arise, says the Lord; I will protect them from those who malign them\u201d (Ps 12:5); \u201cHe will regard the prayer of the destitute, and not despise their supplication\u201d (Ps 102:17); \u201cThen they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress\u201d (Ps 107:13-14); \u201cOut of my distress I called on the Lord; the Lord answered me and set me free\u201d (Ps 118:5); \u201cGod, who comforts the downcast, comforted us\u201d (2 Cor 7:6).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Jesus<\/strong>: \u201cThe Lord\u2026 has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives\u2026, to comfort all who mourn, to provide for those who grieve in Zion\u201d (Is 61:1-3; cf. Lk 4:18); \u201cMoved with compassion, he stretched out his hand\u201d (Mk 1:41); \u201cHe saw a great crowd, and he had compassion on them\u201d (Mk 6:34; cf. 8:2; Mt 9:36); \u201cHe had compassion on them and healed their sick\u201d (Mt 14:14)\u2026<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Holy Spirit<\/strong>: \u201cAnd I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you forever\u201d (Jn 14:16,26); \u201cWhen the Advocate comes\u2026, he will bear witness about me\u201d (Jn 15:26); \u201cIf I do not go away, the Advocate will not come to you\u201d (Jn 16:7).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Job<\/strong>: \u201cI chose their way and sat as chief\u2026, like one who comforts mourners\u201d (Job 29:25).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hezekiah<\/strong>: \u201cHe comforted the mourners in Zion\u201d (Sir 48:24).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The biblicist also reminds us that whoever comforts the afflicted listens to the Word of God. Below are some excerpts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cComfort, comfort my people, says your God\u201d (Is 40:1).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cDo not avoid those who weep, and mourn with those who mourn\u201d (Sir 7:34).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWeep with those who weep\u201d (Rom 12:15).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cBlessed be the God\u2026, Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God\u201d (2 Cor 1:3-4).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cBlessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted\u201d (Mt 5:4).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The biblicist leaves us at the conclusion of this work with a provocation, an inquiry: do we know how to be \u201cfishers of men\u201d (Mk 1:17), recognizing those who comfort the afflicted and proclaiming to them the beatitude of Mercy which states \u201cBlessed are the merciful\u201d (Mt 5:7)?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"pain-is-a-warning-light\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Pain is a warning light<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This Work of Mercy requires us to be attentive observers to identify those around us living in sorrow and who consequently need comfort. We are called to be bearers of hope, \u201cGod will wipe away every tear\u201d (Rev 21:4), certain that God knows our suffering and takes it upon Himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pain is an inevitable condition in human life. Father Fabio Rosini defines it as a symptom, not evil in itself. It is like a warning light that contemporary society tries to silence through numbing remedies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The one who comforts the afflicted should highlight a reversal: perceiving pain as a gift to save oneself, to prevent evil, a starting point and not an end point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Comforting the afflicted is an arduous task; there is no instruction manual and there are no set rules to follow. The only ingredient for success is love. In 2023, she returned to missionary work with the Sorelle di Santa Gemma in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where she remained for three months.
