The corporal work of mercy \u201cvisiting the prisoners\u201d seen through the paintings of some artists<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

What goes through the mind of an inmate, we can well imagine: regrets, hatred, guilt, affections; but what passed through the mind and heart of Saint Peter while he was in prison, we could never imagine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Certainly his faith in the help that God could grant him, through his friend and teacher Jesus, had never abandoned him, but receiving the visit of an angel must have been wonderfully unexpected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This work of mercy was depicted for us, albeit with different purposes, by Raphael Sanzio in the Vatican Rooms. The work, in fact, is entitled the \u201cDeliverance of Saint Peter\u201d and was executed for the Stanza di Eliodoro from 1513 to 1514 by Raphael, already regarded by the critics of his time as \u201cthe Painter\u201d, namely the one who paints by God’s grace, by natural gift, and reaches perfection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the Vatican Rooms, just a few meters away from him in the Sistine Chapel, worked Michelangelo, who was deeply admired by Raphael. Yet to the torment, doubt, and anguish of Michelangelo, Raphael opposed the harmony of the whole arising from his own vision of an ordered world, built by the grace of God to whom he credited every success and to whom he would always remain serenely grateful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The space of the hall available to the master was limited because it was interrupted by a window, but he managed to organize everything in such an architecturally flawless way that we perceive only the beauty of the account (Acts 12:5-12).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the center of the composition, behind bars, the intense light radiating from the angel\u2014a sign of divine intervention\u2014highlights the sheen of the metallic armor of the sleeping guards. On the right, protected by the angel, Peter, with a countenance resigned and burdened by the severity of the trial, watches his chains fall away, walks among the sentries plunged into an unnatural slumber, and heads toward freedom: it is the certainty of the miracle fulfilled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What makes this masterpiece so breathtaking is the light multiplying throughout the various sections of the painting: from the cool white illumination of the crescent moon among clouds, to the reddish glow of dawn on the horizon, to the flickering of torches. These lights piercing the cell’s gloom, the radiant splendor of the angel revealing God’s merciful power, and every superbly crafted detail make the episode realistic, natural, but above all deeply moving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of an entirely different tenor is the penal bath of Portoferraio by Telemaco Signorini (1835\u20131901), a Tuscan Macchiaiolo painter, who shows us other prisoners lined up to pay homage to a visiting party, painted between 1893 and 1894, now preserved in Palazzo Pitti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They stand arranged in two parallel, opposing lines, clearing a path for a small group of guards and prison officials proud of their authority. The irons around their wrists, the worn uniforms, and the faces bearing forced submission and surrender convey the deep psychological distress of their condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In order to portray the visit to the inmates of Portoferraio in the most truthful and realistic light, Signorini placed the \u201cfamous\u201d Lucanian brigand Carmine Crocco in the front rank. Light contributes to heightening that dramatic tension, drawing the eye back to the center of the bare room, toward the figures lined in perspective, defenseless and rendered uniform. In doing so, he removed every extraneous detail that did not serve to communicate the inexorable sentence that society, at times unjustly, has imposed upon man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The condition of grave social, moral, and physical hardship endured for centuries by inmates in penal colonies\u2014which were abolished by the Ricasoli commission in 1862 and in 1891 by Minister Zanardelli\u2014had already become a concern of the Popes over the centuries as early as the 1500s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the close of the sixteenth century, the Pope decreed the establishment of an advocate for prisoners’ rights, ordering that a minimum standard of spiritual care be provided: \u201cLet there be images of Our Lord Jesus Christ, of the Most Glorious Virgin Mary, and of the saints \u2026 ensuring that they confess and receive Communion \u2026 bestowing upon them a blessed rosary\u201d (V. Paglia 1980).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Signorini’s painting no longer resembles the current situation of our more modern, permissive penitentiaries, yet the plight of the prisoner remains grave. Timothy Schmalz, a renowned contemporary artist, astonishes with sculptural solutions that serve across the globe as signs of admonition. Indeed, the work of mercy of visiting the prisoners was synthesized by him in a sculpture that requires no full depiction of the human figure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two arms reaching outward, restricted in movement by heavy bars, are more expressive than a face bearing that anguish. They are the pierced hands of Christ calling for mercy; they represent a plea for help more eloquent than any word, seeking to soften hardened hearts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inmates, often the target of contemptuous criticism, frequently seek forgiveness, as expressed in the prayer of a prisoner at Regina Coeli in Rome, composed in 1958 and quoted at the beginning of \u201cThe Church in Prison\u201d, a book by Antonio Parente: \u201cGrant that human justice may depend upon Thy divine justice, and that the punishment we endure may expiate those faults known only to Thee and from which Thou alone canst redeem \u2026 Restore our honor, rekindle the bonds of love, comfort our loved ones, hasten the day of our release\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This work of mercy proposed to us by the Church is undoubtedly one of the most demanding to carry out, yet because the paths of the Lord are infinite, perhaps we can discover a path leading to the prison, especially when assisted by the appointed chaplain, for the moral and spiritual solace of these unfortunate brothers of ours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
