{"id":99910,"date":"2024-07-14T02:00:49","date_gmt":"2024-07-14T01:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spaziospadoni.org\/?p=99910"},"modified":"2026-10-13T23:27:11","modified_gmt":"2026-10-13T22:27:11","slug":"through-the-eyes-of-art-bearing-with-troublesome-people","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spaziospadoni.org\/en\/through-the-eyes-of-art-bearing-with-troublesome-people\/","title":{"rendered":"Through the Eyes of Art: Bearing with Troublesome People"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The spiritual Work of Mercy \u00abbearing annoying people\u00bb in the Old and New Testaments<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Works of Mercy are actions recommended by the Church for the good of both those who perform them and those who receive them. All are placed on the same level, like the horizon line toward which we must move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is said that patience is the virtue of the strong and that annoying people are everywhere. The difficulty encountered lies in the word that unites patience with annoying people: to bear! The Old and New Testaments are rich in teachings regarding this subject, and it is not easy to choose one and discard another, because all offer us valuable guidance to overcome the trial of revulsion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the great figures of biblical history, Moses is among those who not only bore the constant second thoughts and heavy complaints of his people, but with God\u2019s help, responded by providing them with more than they had asked for. During the journey through the desert, the people lost heart and spoke against God and against Moses; then, the Lord sent poisonous serpents among the people that bit them, and a great number of Israelites died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">God, however, moved by the repentance of the people and the prayer of Moses, commanded him to make a bronze serpent and set it upon a high pole; thus, whenever someone was bitten, looking at the bronze serpent allowed them to stay alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the Sistine Chapel, Michelangelo&#8217;s great masterpiece, perhaps few have noticed, in one of the pendentive corners of the vault, the scene related to this episode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moses erects a bronze serpent precisely to save the Hebrew people, despite their constant and blatant anger toward him and Aaron, repaying the annoyance with a great act of mercy. Michelangelo wanted to heighten the drama and spasms of the Israelites bitten by the serpents, capturing the contortion of bodies trying to break free from the beasts through light, luminous tones and delicate color combinations, while at the center, emerging through subtle shading, stands the tall pole with the copper serpent bringing salvation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Gospel, in addition to Jesus\u2019 tender embrace blessing noisy children and the parable of the persistent widow with the intolerant judge, recounts the episode featuring Jesus and a Canaanite woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was Drouais, born in Paris in 1763 into a family of painters, who in 1784 won the Prix de Rome with \u00abChrist and the Canaanite Woman\u00bb, later exhibited at the Louvre, by interpreting this passage with great power. The scene resembles a theatrical performance, given the sharp contrast in lighting effects illuminating the figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the dark background emerges the figure of Christ who, responding to the apostles, expresses his reluctance toward the Canaanite woman&#8217;s requests. Jesus&#8217; stern gesture of appearing to turn away the woman\u2014who kneels with folded hands pleading for grace\u2014might initially seem like an impolite rejection of a plea for help; instead, it proves to be an invitation to persist in prayer. While the others draw back, creating an empty space around the protagonists, only the elder intercedes to persuade Christ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Out of love for her daughter, this mother does not lose heart, does not walk away resentful, and does not grumble against the Master; she continues to pray and receives not only the requested grace, but also praise from Jesus for her faith. Thus, the large overhead opening reveals a meaningful landscape where a grand temple rises, almost fading into the morning glow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Therefore, even these subtle references brought to life by Old and New Testament figures should encourage us to carry out this Work of Mercy that we are called to practice every day, transforming that difficult and troublesome relationship with others into benevolent charity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Naturally, surpassing all examples is Jesus&#8217; tender embrace of those noisy children who had annoyed the apostles and the crowd\u2014an embrace that would perhaps dissolve the daily annoyances that can arise from many troublesome people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/wiki\/File:Drouais_Cristo_e_la_Cananea.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" title=\"Photo by Wikipedia\"><strong>Photo by Wikipedia<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The spiritual Work of Mercy \u00abbearing annoying people\u00bb in the Old and New Testaments The Works of Mercy are actions recommended by the Church for the good of both those who perform them and those who receive them.
