In Italy, according to the data from the latest report by the Migrantes Foundation, a reversal of the trend. Asylum requests are decreasing

"The right to asylum is established by the Constitutional Charter". "The European Courts of Justice protect the law". Condemnation of the "instrumental management of migratory tragedies".

The President of the Republic Sergio Mattarella speaks at the General States of Diplomacy at the Farnesina and soundly rejects the Meloni government's policy. It is the last intervention on the subject of migration.

There are 130 million people fleeing from wars, hunger and thirst, violence and persecution in the world, a figure that is constantly increasing. In Europe, more than 1,5 million asylum requests were presented in 2023 (+20 percent).

Ma in the first data of 2024 there seems to be a reversal of the trend: in the first months of the year there were 449.000 requests with a decrease of 5 percent, the result of the xenophobic policy of the right-wing government.
In the first eight months of 2024, 109 people requested some form of international protection, a figure that increased by 32 percent.

This is what emerges from the eighth Report on the right to asylum presented in Rome by the Migrantes Foundation of the CEI.
Results aggravated by the condemnation without appeal of the Council of Europe: «In Italy, migrants are sedated and mistreated in the Detention and Repatriation Centers (CPR)». The very specific condemnation comes from the Anti-Torture Committee of the Human Rights Organization.

Of the 130 million refugees in the world, 68 million remain within their own country.; 69 percent seek refuge in neighboring countries, but three out of four of these countries are low- and middle-income. Only a fraction begins a long and dangerous journey to Europe: more than 520 irregular entries into Europe between 2023 and 2024.

More than 1 million asylum requests. For years, Syria and Afghanistan have been the main countries of origin for those fleeing and seeking refuge in the European Union. In Italy, as of January 1, 2024, there are less than 414 non-EU citizens with a residence permit for protection and asylum reasons, 0,7 percent of the population, and this despite the much-trumpeted invasion. There are 138 asylum seekers, refugees, and migrants.

Right to asylum 'increasingly at risk' in the European Union and Italy

The two curators observe: «On the other hand, Italy's responses to the root causes of these forced migrations are not so quick, and there are too few government authorities and institutions that, with seriousness and authority, intend to pursue objectives of peace and justice, while a crazy arms race continues».

Like the Episcopate, the Migrantes Report also judges the new European Pact on Migration and Asylum "a compromise to the downside". There is a strong increase in flows on the routes from West Africa towards the Canary Islands (+123%), the Eastern Mediterranean (+39%), and the Eastern land border (+193%).

In Italy, in 2024, 54 thousand asylum seekers landed: there are 61 fewer, while the other borders are becoming increasingly crowded.
Ministers Salvini and Piantedosi can be satisfied: they have shifted the problems to other European countries.

The majority of arrivals come from Bangladesh (almost 10.800); from Syria (10), not counting the latest revolution with the escape of the "butcher" Assad; from Tunisia (12); from Libya (almost 20 arrivals), a country where there is no respect for human rights.

And in fact the Report underlines that pushbacks towards Libya have increased and the number of refugees intercepted by the Libyan Coast Guard and deported to concentration camps is increasing "with an organised system of poverty, harassment, extortion and violence".

The fact that the "Mare Nostrum" has become the cemetery of these poor creatures is confirmed by the numbers: this year, 1.342 swallowed by the sea due to human wickedness.

The Report also calculates that the risk of losing one's life is one case every 40 arrivals. In ten years (2014-2024) more than 68 thousand migrants and refugees have lost their lives (or are "missing", therefore drowned) and non-governmental organizations this year have saved 6.200 lives, a fifth of those landed in Italy.

Humanitarian corridors

7.831 people in ten years, of which 6.807 in Italy, thanks also to the action of the Catholic Church and some Evangelical Churches, such as the Waldensian one. Up to July 2024, "1.525 people have been welcomed in a protected manner, of which 600 in humanitarian corridors and 863 with humanitarian evacuation initiatives". There is more.

«From February 2016 to September 2024, thanks to the commitment of various associations and religious bodies and protocols signed in various States, the experience of the humanitarian corridors has allowed 7.831 people to reach Europe safely, of whom 6.807 in Italy». As if to demonstrate that, if you want, immigrants can be saved.
