A professional journalist, political scientist, and expert on religious issues, since 2011 he has been the editor of the cultural and religious information magazine "Il Regno," published by the Dehoniano publishing center in Bologna. He joined the editorial staff in 1981 after having worked there since 1979. In 1993, he became editor-in-chief of the "Current Affairs" section, and in 2005, deputy editor. After graduating from high school, he studied under the philosophers Nicola Matteucci at the University of Bologna and Italo Mancini in Urbino. His long collaboration with Professor Arturo Parisi introduced him to political science. He has collaborated with the Cattaneo Institute in Bologna. From 1990, for over a decade, he was a member of the Scientific Committee of the Zancan Foundation for the study of volunteer work in Italy. From 1992 to 2014, he conceived and edited the Annals of the Church in Italy. He has studied the relationship between monasticism and secularism, editing a volume on this topic in 1994, which was also translated into Brazilian. He has written several essays that have appeared in collective works, including: Conflicts, Recognition, Coexistence of Religions (2005); Christians and Public Life in Italy and Europe (2003); Politics in Italy (ed. 2001), published in Italy and the United States; and Laity and Service to the World (1994). From 1998 to 2007, he conducted the “Camaldoli Meetings,” annual study seminars organized by the magazine “Il Regno,” which have become a renowned forum for discussion on the theme of Christian inspiration in relation to Italian and European public life.

In addition to Il Regno, Gianfranco Brunelli has written for several newspapers and periodicals, including Il Corriere della Sera, La Stampa, L'Unità, Avvenire, Il Mulino, Polis, Vida Nueva, and Herder Korrespondenz. He is regularly interviewed on major political and religious issues by Vatican Radio. Also on civil and religious issues, from 1996 to 2002 he was a collaborator of Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, and from 1991 to 2006 of Cardinal Achille Silvestrini. He served as a special advisor in the two Prodi governments (1996-1998 and 2006-2008) and during the Prodi presidency at the Commissariat for the Economy.missionand European. He has worked in publishing and in this capacity was a member of the Board of Directors of the Dehoniano Publishing Center from 2003 until May 2014. Since 2005, he has conceived and organized the major art exhibitions held at the San Domenico Museums, dedicated to Marco Palmezzano, Silvestro Lega, Guido Cagnacci, Antonio Canova, I fiori, Melozzo da Forlì, Wildt, Novecento, Liberty, Boldini, Piero della Francesca, Art Deco, Eterno e Tempo, and the Nineteenth Century. He also held, concurrently, exhibitions dedicated to "Maceo Casadei. The Roman Years," "The Art of Advertising. Posters," "Giuseppe Palanti," and "The Neoclassical Workshop." Since October 12, 2015, he has been a columnist for Il Sole 24 Ore. From 2009 to 2017, he was a member (by patriarchal appointment) of the General Council of the Giorgio Cini Foundation in Venice. Since 2010, he has coordinated the National Scientific Committee of the Intesa San Paolo Cultural Project for the cities of Turin, Milan, Vicenza, Florence, and Naples. Specifically, he conceived the creation of the Gallerie d'Italia in Piazza Scala (with its 31th- and 2015th-century museums); collaborated on the reorganization of the museums of Palazzo Zevallos-Stigliano in Naples and Palazzo Leone-Montanari in Vicenza. More recently, he worked on the creation of the National Photography Center in Turin; on the resumption of the Euploos project (cataloguing and networking the collection of drawings from the Uffizi's Cabinet of Drawings and Prints); on the definition of the 2014-2016 Restitutions Project; and on the project to renovate Casa Manzoni in Milan. He was the curator of the exhibition "Italy and the Italians" (a photography exhibition produced with the Magnum agency for the 150th anniversary of Italian unification and chosen by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs as a representative cultural event for the 2012 London Olympics) and is the general coordinator. He also coordinated the exhibition "Francesco Hayez, Bellotto and Canaletto, Romanticism" at the Gallerie d'Itala in Piazza Scala. Since December 2017, he has been an Honorary Academician of the Rubiconia Accademia dei Filopatridi. On March 12, 2019, he was awarded the Global Fine Art Awards in New York for the exhibition "Eternity and Time between Michelangelo and Caravaggio" (Best Renaissance, Baroque, Old Masters, Dynasties – Group or Theme).
