The Confraternity of Mercy of Castelnuovo Garfagnana is a voluntary association that forms part of the Confraternities of Mercy Movement, founded in Florence in 1244 by Pietro da Verona, later Saint Peter Martyr. Today, the Confraternities of Mercy are present in Italy and abroad with more than 700 confraternities.
History
On 22 April 1451, inspired by Brother Francesco Corso, the Company of the Holy Cross was established in Castelnuovo. The reasons that led to the establishment of the Holy Cross were religious, philosophical and social. At that time, a strong religious sentiment drove many people to follow the teaching of Brother Ercolano, whose dominant theme was the passion and death of Jesus. On the social level, the Holy Cross was established to provide mutual assistance among its members and to help travellers, the poor and the sick. From the first years after its foundation, the municipality of Castelnuovo entrusted the Holy Cross with responsibility for the Hospital of Saint Mary. During the Second World War, the old Hospital and the Church of the Holy Cross were reduced by the war to a pile of rubble. From that period onwards, amid difficulties and sacrifices of every kind, the Confraternity rose again from the material and spiritual ruins left by the war and resumed the service of transporting the sick. In 1951, despite the poverty and hardship of the time, the fifth centenary of the foundation was celebrated. In 1991, the centuries-old life of the Confraternity of Mercy gained new momentum, leading to what it is today.
