The Confraternity of Mercy of Castiglione del Lago is a voluntary association belonging to the Confraternities of Mercy Movement, founded in Florence in 1244 by Pietro da Verona, later known as Saint Peter Martyr. Today, the Confraternities of Mercy are present in Italy and abroad through more than 700 confraternities.
History
The Confraternity of Mercy of Castiglione del Lago was founded in 1992 through the commitment of a small group of volunteers who, from the outset, worked to meet the needs of people living across a large municipal area on the shores of Lake Trasimeno that lacked essential services.
The group of Confraternity members currently comprises about 70 volunteers who, from 1992 to the present day, under the steadfast leadership of governor Ivo Massinelli, have never ceased their commitment to local, national and international social, healthcare and humanitarian activities, providing charitable services inspired by the fundamental values of the Confraternities of Mercy: mission, mercy, freely given service, fraternal help, exchange and cooperation.
With these principles in mind, our Confraternity of Mercy joined the HIC SUM project proposed to us by spazio + spadoni, working with the Benedictine Sisters of Ndanda in Tanzania to establish a poultry farm.
This experience, rich in fraternal love, spirituality and tangible missionary work, continues to this day. Sister Leah Makumbuli, a nun from the Ndanda mission, stayed with us for nine months.
Together with her, we developed the project and sought to put it into practice, with everyone playing a part: from the civil service volunteers to the surveyor and the English teacher, while Sister Leah, in return, took an active role in our institutional services.
