The Confraternity of Mercy of Roccasecca is a voluntary association belonging to the Movement of the Confraternities of Mercy, founded in Florence in 1244 by Pietro da Verona, later known as Saint Peter Martyr. Today, the Confraternities of Mercy are present in Italy and abroad through more than 700 confraternities.
History
The Confraternity of Mercy of Roccasecca was founded in September 1993 and has since carried out voluntary work in the social healthcare and Civil Protection sectors, using its fleet of ambulances and multipurpose vehicles. It owns two premises. Its main activities include transporting patients, transfers from hospitals, transport for diagnostic examinations, assistance at events and competitions, medical support during Civil Protection operations and assistance for people in need.
It works alongside the Institutions, the Diocese, the parish community and other local resources in order to respond appropriately to emerging needs. To achieve this, it mobilises its resources and vehicles to create social and healthcare initiatives and services, in the belief that volunteering and the third sector play a vital role in a society that is becoming increasingly complex and marked by new social tensions and difficulties.
Activities
- TRANSPORT OF PATIENTS IN EMERGENCY AND URGENT SITUATIONS, INCLUDING DIALYSIS PATIENTS
- ASSISTANCE AT EVENTS AND COMPETITIONS (assistance for pilgrims during the funeral of Pope John Paul II and service for pilgrims on the occasion of the canonisation of Padre Pio in Pietrelcina)
- ASSISTANCE FOR ELDERLY AND DISABLED PEOPLE
- CIVIL PROTECTION (exercises in cooperation with the institutions; assistance during the earthquakes in Umbria and Marche, L’Aquila and Amatrice; coordination of rescue operations following the railway accident at Roccasecca station. In 2005, in recognition of its dedication and prompt response to the railway tragedy, the Confraternity of Mercy of Roccasecca was awarded the Gold Medal for Civil Valour of the Italian Republic by President of the Republic Napolitano)
