The Venerabile Confraternita di Misericordia di Monte San Savino is a volunteer association that belongs to the Movimento delle Misericordie, founded in Florence in 1244 by Pietro da Verona, later Saint Peter Martyr. Today, Mercy associations are present in Italy and abroad, with more than 700 brotherhoods.
History
The origins of the Venerabile Confraternita di Misericordia di Monte San Savino date back to 22 August 1785, with the foundation of the Compagnia del SS. Sacramento, based in the Pieve dei SS. Egidio e Savino. Its works included assisting the sick, transporting people to hospitals and burying the deceased. When the parish title in 1813 and then the archpriesthood in 1818 were transferred to the Church of Sant’Agostino, the Pieve was entrusted to the Compagnia del SS. Sacramento, which on 22 September 1851 was authorised by sovereign rescript to assume the title and duties of Confraternita di Misericordia under the invocation of the SS. Sacramento.
In 1854, the new statute governing the operation and activities of the renewed brotherhood was drawn up.
The brotherhood has been affiliated since 1947 with the Confederazione Nazionale delle Misericordie d’Italia, based in Florence and formerly a Federation since 1899, as well as with the Conferenza Regionale delle Misericordie della Toscana and the Federazione delle Misericordie Toscane.
Over the years, the association’s activities have gradually diversified, ranging from medical transport to civil protection and from home care to religious initiatives. Since 1989, the association has been an integral part of the local emergency system and provides medical transport under an agreement with USL 8 Arezzo. Equally important is the civil protection work that involves our volunteers not only in preventing and fighting forest fires, but also in numerous operations supporting areas affected by natural disasters, including the floods in Piedmont and Versilia and the earthquakes in Umbria, Marche and Abruzzo. Always attentive to the challenges of everyday life, the Misericordia also provides social services to support the most disadvantaged members of the Monte San Savino community.
The effectiveness and longevity of an association are directly proportional to its ability to renew itself and its activities, adapting to changing needs and to its members’ different ways of “volunteering”. The following groups currently operate within the Misericordia: the women’s group, engaged in charitable, entertainment and recreational initiatives; the Centro di Formazione IRC Misericordia, dedicated to the medical and technical training of volunteers; the Centro di Ascolto Prevenzione Usura; and the recreational- sports section, which created the Compagnia del Pallone Grosso col Bracciale.
The association’s premises offer members multimedia services, including numerous computer workstations with free Internet access and a conference room with a large screen, as well as logistical facilities, including a kitchen/dining room, dormitory and recreation club. Today, the Misericordia is a friendly and comfortable gathering place where people can make new friends and spend their time productively.
