The Congregation of the African Benedictine Sisters of Our Lady Help of Christians is a congregation of diocesan right. It was founded on 6 January 1946 in Ndanda, Tanzania, by the late abbot and bishop Joachim Amman OSB of Ndanda Abatia Nullius.
The congregation currently has 234 religious sisters working in two countries, Tanzania and Mozambique. The Congregation is founded upon and guided by the Rule of Saint Benedetto, “ORA ET LABORA”, which means “PRAY AND WORK”. Guided by this spirit, the sisters engage in various apostolates such as education, catechesis, healthcare ministry and social work helping those in need, especially women and young people. They also cooperate in various parishes and in missionary work outside the diocese and even outside the Country. In other words, the sisters of the Congregation follow the rule and way of Saint Benedetto under the patronage of the Blessed Virgin Maria. The Mother House is in Ndanda, Tanzania, and the Generalate of the Congregation is in Mikindani Mtwara.
