Mother Scolastica founded the Congregation as the “Little Sisters of Jesus” with the help of the Most Reverend Dr Roche S.J, Bishop of Tuticorin, and the Reverend Fr Aloysious Navamony on 21 June 1952. The Most Reverend Antony Muthu D.D., Bishop of Vellore, brought the sisters to the Diocese of Vellore in 1967. In 1980, the name of the Congregation was changed to “The Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus”.
The Most Reverend Dr A.M. Chinnappa SDB, Bishop of Vellore, officially proclaimed the Congregation diocesan under the leadership of Reverend Mother Selin Mary. The Most Reverend Soundararaju SDB worked to make our Institute a Pontifical Congregation. On 23 April 2017, the Most Reverend Soundararaju announced the new status of Pontifical Congregation to Reverend Mother Amuthatheos. The Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus promote Christian and moral values among the poor without any discrimination, respecting their cultures and beliefs; they support families in a spirit of cordiality and solidarity, facing problems with them and clarifying problem areas They help them understand their problem and clarify the problem areas; they provide spiritual instruction in groups, women’s associations and meetings. These group activities help people to think, become aware of their situation and live according to the word of God. The sisters prepare Christian people to read and listen to the word of God step by step, meditating on it and integrating it into the reality of their lives. The sisters participate in social action activities to empower children, women, those who are oppressed and less privileged in society through youth development, social awareness, and mental, physical and health awareness programmes.
