There are places in the world where daily life turns into a silent, dramatic struggle for survival. In the remote village of Baba 1, located in the North-West region of Cameroon, the population has been facing a severe humanitarian crisis for years. Extreme poverty, the absence of adequate infrastructure, a lack of clean water, and limited access to education describe a situation of profound vulnerability. This context has been further aggravated by an ongoing armed conflict characterized by violence, systematic kidnappings, and constant insecurity that has forced many to flee.
Yet, in this landscape shaped by fear, some have courageously chosen not to leave. Today, the Sisters of the Holy Union represent the only religious community remaining in the area. Present since the 1960s, these sisters have decided to stand alongside local families, transforming their daily lives into a concrete testimony of closeness and solidarity.
The choice to stay: the presence of the gift
What drives someone to remain in a place from which everyone else is trying to escape? The answer lies in the deep value of presence. To stay means pronouncing every day HIC SUM, a living «here I am». expressed through daily acts of welcome and listening toward those who suffer. The sisters share the anxieties of the local population, providing a safe point of reference when all certainties seem to collapse.
In a global landscape often dominated by indifference, this decision embodies the dynamics of reciprocity in giving. It is not merely emergency aid, but a shared journey in which the inherent dignity of the other person is recognized, protected, and promoted at all costs.
Serving wounds without counting the cost
The response to suffering translates into concrete actions on the ground. The sisters ensure care for isolated elderly people, assist women during pregnancy and childbirth, intervene in cases of child malnutrition, and treat children suffering from sudden illnesses. The charity lived in this corner of Africa is not a vague feeling, but a radical commitment to serve others without calculating personal costs or consequences.
Medical support and community healthcare thus become tangible expressions of the works of mercy. Every life protected and every wound treated represent a real step toward upholding human dignity.
A rooted hope that does not disappoint
The story of Baba 1 demonstrates that hope is not a passive expectation, but an active, courageous choice. Choosing to serve in the most forgotten peripheries of the planet shows how compassion can trigger processes of social change. Even amidst the devastation of war, the continuity of care and service proves that fraternity can overcome the cycle of hatred.
