In 1964, two Holy Spirit Sisters from Germany went to Tanzania and began the mission in the diocese of Moshi. After a few months in the same year, several local girls joined them and established the community in Tanzania.
In 1967, the Pastoral Theological Centre was opened; in 1972, the sisters began carrying out pastoral activities, working in a dispensary and in agriculture and developing it into a health centre. In 2011, the Magnificat Secondary School was opened, thus encouraging boys and girls to continue their secondary education. At the end of 1977, the sisters began a mission in the diocese of Morogoro, where they worked at the Youth Social Education Centre, carried out pastoral work in the town and visited female prisoners. Today, they also run a Nursery, Primary and Secondary School for boys and girls. In 1993, they expanded into Central Africa in the diocese of Mzuzu, strengthening small Christian communities, teaching religion in primary schools, instructing children and catechumens for the sacraments of initiation, and supporting women and youth groups. In 2008, the sisters opened a nursery school that now has more than 80 children.
The Holy Spirit Sisters serve in 32 dioceses in Germany, the United States, Africa, India and the Philippines. Their international centre is located in Mammolshain, Germany.
Charism
The charism of the Congregation is to bring Christ, God’s incarnate love, into every sphere of life and thus help the Church in its work of renewal for a Spirit-filled world, so that God may be all in all. The Holy Spirit Sisters are engaged in activities concerning healthcare, education, social and pastoral work, the empowerment of women, care for the poor and elderly women, and care for people with HIV.
