The Congregation of the Dominican Sisters Daughters of Saint Catherine of Siena is a Religious Institute of Diocesan Right of consecrated life. Community life is an expression of fraternal love and a witness to Christian charity.
Every community is a house of love. The Congregation of the Dominican Sisters of Saint Catherine of Siena was founded in 1942 by Bishop Constant-Robert Lagae, then Apostolic Vicar of Niangara (1924-1948). It was born from a sudden inspiration of the Holy Spirit. The sisters have embraced the spirit of the Founder: “Let us work in the Light of the Lord”. The Institute was built on a miracle of God’s love and on the faith of the Dominican Sisters of Namur. Sister Rose Pinpester, a Dominican missionary from Namur, is in fact considered the co-foundress of the Congregation of the Dominican Sisters of Saint Catherine of Siena of Isiro-Niangara. Bishop Lagae entrusted her with responsibility for the new congregation. As it developed, the Congregation of the Dominican Sisters of Saint Catherine of Siena of Isiro-Niangara asked to be incorporated into the Dominican Order. The sisters are present in several dioceses of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Isiro-Niangara, Dungu-Doruma, Kisangani, Kinshasa, Kisantu); in addition, some of them study in Italy and Belgium.
Charism
The charism is expressed in the sanctification of the members through the evangelical counsels of chastity, poverty and obedience. The specific charism reflects being both Martha and Mary: “Like Mary: choose the better part: prayer (Lk 10:42), and like Martha: nourish our brothers and sisters with the truth” through education, healthcare and charitable work.
