The Congregation of the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of Ouagadougou is a missionary and apostolic Congregation. The sisters are committed wherever they perceive a need for human development for the Glory of God.
The sisters strive to proclaim Christ through prayer, pastoral and social commitment, and closeness to the poorest. The Congregation was founded in Burkina Faso on 11 April 1924. In 1993, it became a Congregation of Pontifical Right. The Mother House is located in Ouagadougou, which is the capital of Burkina Faso. The Congregation has approximately 465 sisters in 88 communities across 9 countries, namely Burkina Faso, Italy, France, Algeria, Benin, Togo, Ivory Coast, Mali, Niger. Their founder is Msgr Joanny Thevenoud, the first Bishop of Burkina Faso, a member of the Society of the White Fathers, originally from Savoy (France). The Congregation was founded for evangelisation in Africa and everywhere. As the country’s first indigenous Congregation, the founder’s objective was precisely to collaborate with priests for evangelisation and the liberation of women.
Charism
The charism of the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception is multifaceted. The sisters work in parishes in education and healthcare, but are available for any work deemed necessary for the good of their brothers and sisters.
