Within a few months of returning, and thanks to financial support from spazio + spadoni, Sister Lea managed to start a small poultry farm. However, the venture was unsuccessful because a disease killed almost all the animals. The Congregation made a 39-are plot of land available for developing the projects. The sisters aim to develop bread production and grow legumes. While the project and its expected costs and revenues are being redefined, Sister Lea, drawing on the training she completed in Italy through the spazio + spadoni HIC SUM project, began producing homemade pasta and biscuits and successfully sold some of them.
Sister Lea belongs to the Suore Bene Mariya Congregation and returned to Ngozi, Burundi, after training at Misericordia di Arezzo. While Sister Lea was in Italy, two other sisters from her Congregation trained at different Misericordie in the province of Arezzo.
A few days after returning to Burundi, she attended an advanced course on poultry farming and began looking for breeders and suppliers who could help her establish a chicken coop. In Ngozi, Sister Lea works at her community’s hospital.
