Sister Joan has developed a chicken farm in Kwale. Precisely, spazio + spadoni’s investment, in addition to completing the chicken coop, made it possible to purchase over a thousand chickens for eggs and meat. With this activity, Sister Joan benefits the community and the poor in the area. The Sisters of St. Joseph Congregation has also invested many human resources for the meticulous diffusion of the Works of Mercy, so much so as to create a real office dedicated to the diffusion of the Works.
Sister Joan approached spazio + spadoni when she was already in Italy, in her community of Latisana where she was responsible for teaching kindergarten and helping the Parish especially in catechesis. Since there are no associations nearby willing to carry out the project and Sister Joan’s commitment is a daily one, we structured HIC SUM in a different way from the traditional one. Sister Joan had about a month’s experience at Misericordia di Orta Nova and at Monte San Savino. In August 2023, she returned to Kwale, in Kenya, a town with over 4000 predominantly Muslim inhabitants, located about 35 km from Mombasa. Kwale is an important commercial and connecting point for all the surrounding small rural communities. The economy is mainly based on the trade of agricultural products such as papaya, mango, coconuts, tapioca and corn and other varieties of vegetables and cereals.
