The Confraternity of Mercy of Monte San Giovanni Campano is a voluntary association belonging to the Confraternities of Mercy Movement, founded in Florence in 1244 by Pietro da Verona, later known as Saint Peter Martyr. Today, the Confraternities of Mercy are present in Italy and abroad through more than 700 confraternities.
History
In Monte San Giovanni Campano, the “Confraternity of Mercy” was founded in 1998 and affiliated with the National Confederation of the Confraternities of Mercy of Italy on 3 March 2001 through the initiative of a small group of people, some of whom had previous volunteering experience. As always, the beginning of this new venture was difficult, but time proved them right. Over the years, the Association has grown considerably in both the number of members and the quantity and quality of the services it provides. The Confraternity of Mercy is a voluntary association operating in the healthcare sector, primarily, but not exclusively, by transporting patients. The Association assisted travellers at Fiumicino Airport when flights throughout Europe were suspended because of the eruption of the Icelandic volcano, and during emergencies such as the San Giuliano di Puglia earthquake, the L’Aquila earthquake and the railway accident at Roccasecca station. Thanks to the volunteers’ high standard of training, which has become increasingly professional over the years, the range of services offered by the Confraternity of Mercy to the community has expanded. In addition to medical transport, the Confraternity of Mercy of Monte San Giovanni Campano also supports sporting events —football matches, running races, motor races and dance competitions— and public events, using two ambulances equipped with everything required —a semi-automatic defibrillator, suction device, cervical collars and splints— for cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the treatment of various types of trauma.
