The Confraternity of Mercy of Uzzano is a voluntary association belonging to the Movement of the Confraternities of Mercy, founded in Florence in 1244 by Pietro da Verona, later known as Saint Peter Martyr. Today, the Confraternities of Mercy are present in Italy and abroad through more than 700 confraternities.
History
There was once an ancient and distinguished Confraternity of Mercy in Uzzano which, having been founded in 1672, was the second oldest in the Valdinievole after the one in Pescia. As the population gradually moved down to the plain towards Chiesina and Santa Lucia, the old Confraternity of Mercy came to be represented by a beautiful historic flag and a few elderly, devoted members who preserved its name and symbol for as long as they lived. The old and distinguished Confraternity of Mercy did not die, because its spirit continued to live on in the new generations who, some years ago, approached the Pescia branch to open new premises in Santa Lucia. It began as a section of Pescia but was immediately granted full autonomy and received support in establishing itself as a new, independent Confraternity of Mercy.
