Misericordia di Rosolini is a voluntary association that is part of the Movimento delle Misericordie, founded in Florence in 1244 by Pietro da Verona, later known as San Pietro Martire. Today, the Misericordie are present in Italy and abroad with over 700 confraternities.
History
Misericordia di Rosolini was founded on 5 June 1995 and became operational on 1 February 1996. Thanks to the contributions of many local residents and the determination of several founding members, the first ambulance was purchased, and others were soon added thanks to public and private contributions. Alongside its healthcare activities, the Gruppo di Protezione Civile took shape and gained momentum, and by Decree n. 274 of 24 September 2020, issued by the Director General of the Dipartimento di Protezione Civile della Regione Siciliana, the confraternity was entered in the Elenco Territoriale del Volontariato di Protezione Civile. In 1996, the Gruppo Donatori di Sangue Fratres “S. Luigi” was founded to collect blood and spread a culture of donation, including organ donation. In 2004, specifically on 28 November, the Cooperativa Sociale Buon Samaritano della Misericordia di Rosolini was established. People who, because of their health and financial circumstances, are unable to manage ordinary activities of daily life turn to the Misericordia: grocery shopping, talking with friendly people who know how to listen, buying medicines and handling small household chores. The “Prontomisericordia” service was therefore established specifically to meet the needs of these brothers and sisters in difficulty. Other needs related to marginalisation led to the creation of a Social Service providing practical help and support: transport for people with disabilities, companionship for people with disabilities and loans of medical equipment. In 1998, the periodical “La Voce della Misericordia di Rosolini” was launched thanks to the dedication of its late managing editor, cav. Luigi Faraone; it ceased publication in 2013. In 2018, the Gruppo IRC (Italian Resuscitation Council Comunità) was founded to promote a culture of medical emergency response and safeguard human life by spreading knowledge of cardiopulmonary and cerebral resuscitation (CPR) and the use of semi-automatic defibrillators. In 2020, the confraternity joined the HIC SUM project by spazio + spadoni. Misericordia di Rosolini is accredited for Servizio Civile Universale and Garanzia Giovani.
