Anticipation is growing for the symposium in the DRC
More than a month remains before the symposium in memory of Mgr. Munzihirwa, but the event is highly anticipated.

The city of Lubumbashi, in the southeastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, will host from October 29 to 31, 2026, the third international symposium dedicated to msgr. Christophe Munzihirwa, S.J., archbishop of Bukavu assassinated on October 29, 1996, at the beginning of the First Congo War.

This edition takes on a twofold symbolic significance: the centenary of his birth (1926-2026) and the thirtieth anniversary of his assassination.

Held under the high patronage of the Central Africa Province of the Society of Jesus and the Archdiocese of Lubumbashi, the symposium will focus on the theme: «Msgr. Christophe Munzihirwa, S.J., and the challenges of peace in the DRC: what contributions to the social pact for coexistence?»

A dialogue for peace in a context of crisis

While the DRC prepares to organize a national dialogue and continues to face armed conflicts in the east of the country, massive population displacements, and social tensions, the organizers intend to make the symposium «an inclusive platform for dialogue, reflection and concrete proposals».

«The objective is not only to remember, but to transform the memory of msgr. Munzihirwa into tools for today: peace, reconciliation, justice and social cohesion», explains father Toussaint Kafarhire, S.J., coordinator of the event.

A Jesuit, formerly bishop of Kasongo and archbishop of Bukavu, msgr. Munzihirwa is recognized as one of the prophetic voices of the Congolese Church. Between 1994 and 1996, he stood out for welcoming refugees and for his public stances against the violence perpetrated against civilian populations. He was killed in Bukavu during the capture of the city by the AFDL.

300 participants expected and a white paper

The symposium is expected to bring together around 300 participants from all provinces of the country: religious leaders, academics, civil society representatives, youth, and peacebuilders from the Great Lakes region.

According to the organizers, the participation of the Apostolic Nuncio to the DRC and several prelates has already been confirmed.

The proceedings will lead to two primary outcomes: a White Paper containing concrete recommendations addressed to political decision-makers, Churches, and civil society, as well as educational tools designed for young people on the theme of coexistence.

The sessions will take place in person in Lubumbashi, with the option to participate remotely.
