For the first time in history, the World Athletics Championships will be held on the African continent. Since the inaugural edition hosted in Helsinki in 1983, the world’s foremost track and field competition had never taken place in an African nation, extending an unjustified four-decade absence for a land that has given athletics its most revered legends.
The historic breakthrough took place in Budapest, where the World Athletics Council selected the Kenyan capital: Nairobi will officially host the 2029 edition, prevailing over formidable European bids from cities such as Rome and London.
An unprecedented milestone for the entire continent
For Africa, this milestone marks a social and cultural triumph as much as an athletic one. For generations, African athletes have excelled on tracks across the globe, frequently running far from their home communities, which are filled with profound passion and resilient spirit. Kenya pursued this vision with great perseverance: after falling short for the 2025 championships awarded to Tokyo, the nation persisted, putting forward an authoritative project rooted in solidarity and shared human potential.
The nation’s sporting pedigree speaks for itself: holding more than one hundred gold medals across Olympic and World Championship history, Kenya stands as the second most successful nation in the history of the event. From pioneers like Kip Keino and Tegla Loroupe to contemporary icons David Rudisha, Faith Kipyegon, and Eliud Kipchoge, these runners have inspired millions through dedication and character. In 2029, for the first time, these athletes will compete before their home crowd.
Modern infrastructure and a vision for the future
The decision is supported by concrete logistical preparations. The Kasarani Stadium is already undergoing comprehensive modernizations in preparation for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, co-hosted with Uganda and Tanzania. The venue will be fully prepared well ahead of time, drawing on Nairobi’s successful track record in staging both the World U18 and U20 Championships.
World Athletics President Sebastian Coe described the choice as «historic». Emphasizing that running is central to the nation’s identity, Coe stated:
«It was important that the World Championships arrived in Africa when we had the right host, the right bid, and the right circumstances».
The event will also champion rigorous standards of athletic transparency and fair play.
For the first time, young people across the continent will witness their heroes up close, discovering in sport a genuine engine of hope, fraternity, and common dignity.
