When catastrophic floods turn families into wayfarers
The devastating floods that recently hit Nepal, particularly in the Nuwakot district and the Trisuli river valley, have left a painful trail of destruction and sorrow. Entire communities suddenly found themselves without homes, schools, or basic necessities. In this tragic crisis reported by Agenzia Fides through Father Silas Bogati, Administrator of the Apostolic Vicariate of Nepal, hundreds of local people have become refugees in their own homeland.
Faced with such humanitarian devastation, the Christian mission takes on an immediate and practical urgency. Amid contemporary hardships, the ancient evangelical call of sheltering pilgrims proves more relevant than ever. Today’s pilgrims are mothers, fathers, and children forced to flee the overwhelming power of floodwaters and landslides, searching tirelessly for a secure haven where they can start rebuilding their lives.
Shelter, dignity, and human warmth in reception centres
The Catholic response was swift and determined. Accompanied by Sister Cecilia Durga Shrestha, Executive Director of Caritas Nepal, Father Bogati visited affected areas to assess the damage and coordinate direct assistance. Three reception shelters and eight child-friendly spaces are already operating in Nuwakot, offering essential supplies, nutritious meals, and vital protection, with special focus on vulnerable unaccompanied minors.
Yet, as Father Bogati pointed out, this commitment goes far beyond material logistics. Beside distributing vital emergency relief, there lies an essential duty of pastoral presence and listening: «Alongside material aid, there is the mission to bring consolation». Welcoming others does not merely mean providing a temporary roof; it means restoring personal dignity to those traumatized by loss, fostering welcoming spaces where vulnerability meets brotherly love.
