Democratic Republic of the Congo – Africa | Project #18 & 19 of 72

After returning to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sister Angele went to Elikya, where she was supposed to start a bakery. This was not possible because the local assessment did not indicate that the social enterprise would develop successfully in terms of bread sales. Sister Angele is considering whether and how to develop an agricultural project, also with the help of another sister who attended the one-month course in Italy on the Works of Mercy and the Economy of Communion promoted by spazio + spadoni.

Sister Marguerite and Sister Angele belong to the Soeurs Dominicaines Missionnaires des Familles Congregation, whose charism is summarized as the evangelization of the world through family ministry and healthcare. During their time in Italy, they were hosted at the Convento di San Francesco by the Franciscan Sisters of Borgo a Mozzano and trained together at the Misericordia di Borgo a Mozzano. With the help of volunteers, they took an Italian course to improve their language skills, as well as courses in baking, first aid, and medicinal plants; they also provided activities and assistance at the residential care home managed by the Misericordia.

Sister Marguerite, on the other hand, went to Isiro, where her project involves building several rooms at the Congregation’s hospital, a key facility for the village where she works as a doctor. A well has currently been built in the community thanks to cooperation with several benefactors from Borgo a Mozzano whom the sisters met during their stay in Italy.
