Italy- According to the indication of the title, the author of Psalm 62 is King David, while he was dwelling in the wilderness of Judah during the rebellion of his son Absalom (2 Sam 15:23-30). A longing and an ardent thirst for God impels the psalmist in search of his Lord, as the parched land seeks water. He longs to contemplate His power and His glory in the Temple: for him, God’s love matters more than life itself: “O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you in a dry and weary land where there is no water. I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory. Because your love is better than life” (vv. 2-4).
- God is the supreme good: with Him, as at a rich banquet, our whole life is satisfied, and in praising Him we exult with joy. Even in the hours of the night, the psalmist thinks of God and feels protected by His love as if by loving wings (vv. 5-8). The psalmist entrusts himself totally to the Lord who sustains him with the strength of His right hand: this total trust makes him secure even in the face of all his enemies and all the trials of life (vv. 9-12).
- With the wonderful elevations of the Psalm, the Lord leads us from the anxiety of searching to the joy of communion and abandonment into the arms of Him who sustains us with strength, and whose love is the true meaning of our life. Authentic prayer is always a search for and aspiration toward God. This Psalm helps us to go docilely toward God, who illuminates us as we think of Him, and feeds us deeply as we adore Him: “When I think of you who have been my help, I exult in the shadow of your wings. My soul clings to you; your right hand sustains me” (vv. 7-9).
