- Psalm 17, of which the liturgy of the XXX Sunday in Ordinary Time has us pray some verses, is a long Psalm of incredible power. In the title it is stated that David sang it on the day God delivered him from the hands of all his enemies and from the hand of Saul. With some variations, the Psalm is recounted in 2 Sam 22.
- The life of David, as was also that of Jesus and as is that of all Christians, is a continuous succession of struggles that nevertheless take place in the presence of God, accompanied by his wondrous interventions. In Psalm 17, God’s intervention is described with very powerful, apocalyptic language, with true cosmic upheavals that God brings about to save his faithful one: tidal waves, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, thunder and lightning, hail and burning coals, even to shaking the foundations of the world (vv. 5-20): these are the ways in which the power of God coming to the aid of his faithful is expressed.
- For this reason, the believer proclaims the Lord as rock, fortress, deliverer, crag in which we find shelter, shield and bulwark, mighty salvation (v. 3). The joy of this continuous and sure support causes the faithful to burst into songs of exultation and joy, because God always grants us his protection, and his Providence saves us in every circumstance.
