Psalm XXIX SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

15 October 2026

Psalm
  1. Psalm 95 is recounted almost entirely in 1 Chr 16:23-33 to celebrate the transfer of the ark of the Covenant, and was probably composed during the years of exile for the liturgical worship of the Temple. The Psalm reflects the universalist ideas of the Kingdom of God over the whole world, set forth in the second part of the prophecies of Isaiah. It therefore has a messianic and eschatological character.
  2. The psalmist invites all peoples (vv. 1-3) and also all creation (“heavens, earth, sea, fields, trees of the forest…”: vv. 11-12) to sing a new song to the Lord so that all may know his wonders. Indeed, he is the only God: the other divinities worshipped by men are nothing before him (vv. 4-6). Let all peoples therefore render worship to God, “who comes to judge the world with justice and all peoples with truth” (v. 13).
  3. How much we need to pray this Psalm in a world where the idolatry of money, the market, and power seem to suffocate civil life and bathe the entire earth in blood! We need to sing with joy and exultation that God in the end will triumph completely over evil and wars and, despite everything, in his immense mercy, “will uphold the world so that it does not totter” (v. 10).
