The security situation remains extremely precarious in the territory of Kalehe (South Kivu), directly threatening the survival of thousands of civilians.
According to SECURITY ALERT No. 6 issued by the Association des Enfants et Jeunes Travailleurs (AEJT-RDC), Kalehe branch, armed clashes are concentrated specifically in the grouping of Mubuku (Mushungu, Kachikahuma, Nyamasheya) and the grouping of Ziralo (Tshunguti and Mianda).
A massive humanitarian crisis
Direct consequence: a massive displacement of people fleeing the clashes, day and night.
Following consultations with the displaced persons committees of Bulambika and Hombo, AEJT-RDC reports an alarming provisional toll:
• 15,492 displaced people are located in the commercial center of BULAMBIKA and its surroundings; • 10,877 displaced people are in the commercial center of HOMBO, coming from Walowa-Lwanda, Mianda, and Ziralo.
In total, more than 26,000 people are packed into two commercial centers without adequate humanitarian assistance.
Cholera threatens
The alert highlights a second, equally deadly danger: the high concentration of people in Bulambika, Hombo, and other reception areas fuels the spread of the cholera epidemic, which has already caused numerous deaths.
The health situation is critical. Many patients are being treated at the Bunyakiri General Reference Hospital and various healthcare facilities across the area, which are already overwhelmed.
